One idea worth returning to.

5.9 Percent Versus 56.7 Percent

One side of the Bitcoin options scanner found an eligible setup in 5.9% of completed scans. The other found one in 56.7%.

The obvious conclusion would favor the busy side.

The portfolio reached a different answer.

The quiet side was covered-call research. Its setup required premium richness, fresh resistance structure, suitable delta, volatility alignment and usable liquidity. During the final fourteen days of the audited window, zero scans produced an eligible call before portfolio risk.

The busy side was cash-secured-put research. More than half the scans found a market setup. A one-slot capacity rule blocked most additional entries once the paper book was occupied.

One side lacked alignment. The other lacked approved capacity.

Opportunity frequency described the market. Edge still had to include the portfolio.

The Scanner Was Answering the Wrong Question

“How many opportunities did we find?” is an attractive question because it has a clean count.

The investment question is messier:

How many opportunities fit the strategy, the evidence, the execution model and the capital budget at the same time?

The audit examined a month of paper-only forward records across several configuration eras. The counts therefore described what the daemon saw at each scan. They were not a perfect replay under one current rule set. Multiple rejection reasons could apply to the same contract. The report preserved these limitations because precision without lineage would create a stronger claim than the data earned.

Even with those boundaries, the bottleneck pattern was clear.

Calls rarely assembled all the necessary ingredients. Puts assembled them often, then met the portfolio’s deliberate one-position limit. Loosening a call filter would address setup scarcity. Expanding put capacity would address risk budget. Treating both as “too few trades” would prescribe the same medicine to different patients.

Near Misses Need Their Own Lane

The call side generated a large field of near misses.

Some premiums were too cheap. Some deltas fell outside the intended band. Some spreads were too wide. Many strikes failed the relationship to resistance. Several contracts failed more than one gate.

A binary production rule is useful for capital. It is crude for learning.

The research response was a B_watch lane. The official A_trade gate would stay strict. Near-miss candidates could receive a score across premium, resistance distance, delta quality, volatility relationship, liquidity and stress. The watch lane could then answer a better question: did the hard gate reject acceptable rent, or did it correctly exclude noisy structures?

This preserves two different jobs.

The production-like paper lane protects the strategy contract. The research lane studies the boundary without changing it.

That separation prevents curiosity from becoming capital authority.

Capacity Creates Scarcity on Purpose

The put side revealed the opposite lesson.

Frequent eligible contracts did not mean the book should stack them. A cash-secured put consumes real downside capacity. Several contracts on one underlying can turn a stream of small premiums into a concentrated obligation during a fast decline.

The one-slot paper limit made that concentration visible. Once the slot was occupied, duplicate and maximum-position gates rejected additional candidates. Those rejections were evidence that the portfolio rule worked.

Calling them “missed opportunities” would assume capital is free and risk is independent. Neither assumption belongs in an investment process.

Capacity is part of edge because opportunity must be sized through a portfolio. A trade that only works when risk limits disappear has not established edge.

Fresh Context Is a Strategy Input

Resistance levels added another layer.

The call logic used configured resistance to judge whether a strike offered an intelligent exit door. Those levels eventually became stale under the project’s freshness policy. Historical rejection tokens did not encode that staleness at the time, so the audit preserved it as a hindsight context flag.

This matters because a rule can remain internally consistent while its context expires. The software applies the stored resistance exactly. The market has moved on. A clean boolean result can hide a stale premise.

The answer was a refresh discipline after a bounded time or a material spot move. The system should ask for updated structure instead of loosening a threshold around old structure.

This is common in investing. Valuation multiples, competitive maps, credit comparables and technical levels all decay. A model can repeat yesterday’s logic perfectly and still make today’s decision with stale coordinates.

Opportunity Has Four Gates

I now separate opportunity into four gates.

Market gate. Does the instrument display the price, volatility, liquidity and structure the thesis requires?

Strategy gate. Does the setup match the rules that created the historical or forward evidence?

Portfolio gate. Is there approved capacity after concentration, collateral and existing positions?

Execution gate. Can the trade be entered and managed at costs that preserve the expected value?

A scanner typically sees the first gate. An investable edge survives all four.

The call side usually stopped at the market or strategy gate. The put side often reached the portfolio gate. A future capacity study could test whether a larger put book has attractive portfolio economics. That study would need correlated stress, collateral usage and path behavior. Frequency alone cannot grant the expansion.

Idleness Can Be an Edge

The audit’s most mature recommendation was to accept call idleness.

That choice did not mean accepting blindness. The system would preserve strict official samples, score near misses, refresh resistance and keep observing. It would refuse to force rent when richness, structure, delta and volatility did not align.

Options markets are unusually good at making action look productive. Every contract has a premium. Every expiry creates a clock. Every quiet position can be compared with cash that might have been collected.

Patience has no ticker.

Yet the covered-call mandate was never “sell an option every week.” It was to collect attractive rent at an approved exit door. Cheap rent at a poor door is activity. Attractive rent at a useful door may be edge.

The missing trade protects the distinction.

The Executive Scorecard

An executive reviewing a strategy should ask for more than candidate count.

  • Opportunity frequency: how often does the market present the raw setup?
  • Quality distribution: how far do near misses sit from the admission gate?
  • Portfolio clearance: how many setups fit current capacity?
  • Execution viability: how much edge remains after realistic friction?
  • Context freshness: which decision inputs can expire?
  • Forward conversion: how often do admitted paper setups complete as the thesis expected?

These measures reveal the bottleneck without prescribing a trade.

For Bitfire, the decision was specific. Keep the strict official gate. Build the watch-scoring study. Refresh structural inputs. Accept covered-call idleness. Treat put expansion as a separate portfolio-capacity question.

The scanner had found opportunities. The portfolio had decided which ones were allowed to become knowledge, which could become paper positions and which should remain on the screen.

That is where opportunity begins turning into edge.

Build the conversion funnel

The four gates can become a measurable funnel.

Begin with completed scans. Count how many contain at least one market setup. Then count how many clear the strategy contract, how many fit current portfolio capacity and how many remain viable after realistic execution. Preserve the reason each candidate leaves the funnel.

This design avoids a common denominator error. Candidate rows are useful for field diagnostics. Scan-level frequency describes how often an operator had a decision. Position-level counts describe what the portfolio could actually admit. Mixing them can make a dense option chain look like hundreds of independent opportunities.

The funnel also reveals the correct owner. Market scarcity belongs to research. Stale context belongs to operations or analysis. Portfolio concentration belongs to the capital owner. Wide spreads belong to execution. A generic instruction to loosen the strategy would cross all four jurisdictions.

What would falsify the strict gate

Discipline needs a route to change.

The watch lane should compare near misses with official samples across matched market windows. Did contracts rejected for one borderline factor deliver similar rent with acceptable stress? Did several weak factors interact badly? Did the strict gate protect the portfolio during adverse moves? How sensitive are conclusions to realistic fills and capacity?

If repeated forward evidence shows a specific gate rejects valuable setups without improving risk, a bounded challenger can earn promotion. If near misses remain noisy, idleness receives stronger support.

The key is changing one coordinate at a time. A broad relaxation can produce more trades and conceal which rule mattered.

The portfolio has a memory too

Capacity should be measured across lifecycles, not only at entry. A put slot may remain occupied through a stress period. A covered call may commit an exit door through an event. Two apparently different strategies may share the same underlying or volatility exposure.

The system needs memory of existing obligations before it calls the next screen candidate an opportunity. Edge belongs to the whole book, including what the book has already promised.

Compare quality-adjusted opportunity

Raw frequency gives every passing scan equal weight. A better research measure combines frequency with distance from the gate, expected fully net return, liquidity and stress behavior. It asks how often the market offers a setup worth owning, rather than how often one boolean becomes true.

This quality-adjusted view should remain descriptive until enough forward lifecycle evidence exists. A high score organizes study. It never grants a position by itself.

Capacity is a price

When one slot is occupied, the next candidate competes with the existing position and with future optionality. The hurdle should include the value of the capacity it consumes.

That value rises during concentrated or volatile conditions. A merely eligible put may be inferior to keeping cash available for a deeper dislocation. A call may offer rent and surrender an exit door the owner values more.

The portfolio can therefore reject an individually attractive trade for a rational reason the scanner cannot see. Opportunity belongs to the market. Edge belongs to an owner with finite capacity.

The one-page bottleneck memo

A useful monthly memo can show the four-stage funnel, the largest rejection clusters, capacity occupancy, stale context, strongest near misses and exactly one research change. It should preserve the policy version and data window.

One change matters. If the team alters several gates together, more activity cannot explain which coordinate produced it. The memo turns idleness into a measured research program rather than an emotional pressure to trade.

A decision has an owner

Market and strategy gates can be automated in a paper lab. Portfolio capacity still belongs to the capital owner. The system may show the obligation, overlap and strongest alternative. It cannot manufacture permission from an attractive score.

That boundary keeps the research ambitious and the portfolio sovereign.

The best scanner can therefore end with a question instead of an order. It shows the owner what the market offers, what the current book has promised and which alternative deserves scarce capacity. Judgment enters at the right altitude.

That final human decision is part of the edge, too.

It converts a market possibility into an owned portfolio consequence.

The investment transfer

Deal teams can use the funnel before calling a pipeline valuable. Initial targets, diligenced companies, financeable structures and portfolio-fit transactions are different populations. A large top of funnel may coexist with zero deployable capital opportunities.

The bottleneck points to the next action. More sourcing helps market scarcity. Better diligence helps evidence scarcity. Structure work helps financing. Portfolio scarcity belongs to the capital committee. Opportunity becomes edge only after the whole institution can own the consequence.

That ownership includes the freedom to let a plausible deal pass.

Scarce capital earns the right to be selective.

That right is worth preserving visibly.
