The 2 Trillion IPO

One idea worth returning to.
The $2 Trillion Question
I was sitting at my desk holding a cup of coffee when a headline made me stop scrolling.
$2,000,000,000,000.
Investors were discussing an October market debut for Anthropic at a valuation of at least $2 trillion. The company had confidentially submitted a draft S-1 in June. It had yet to announce a final date or price. The conversation itself carried the signal.
Anthropic was founded in 2021. Five years later, institutional investors were debating whether a company built around frontier intelligence could enter the public market above the valuation SpaceX achieved in its record June IPO.
The final number may move. The deeper message is already visible:
Intelligence is becoming a foundational infrastructure layer of the global economy.
Anthropic Builds the Grid
Anthropic’s growth has converted a model laboratory into an enterprise utility. Developers live beside Claude Code. Financial teams use models for analysis and workflow design. Companies deploy agents that work through multi-step tasks for hours. The product feels less like an application window and more like a power plant: compute enters, reasoning leaves, and modern work reorganizes around the output.
That shift explains why investors tolerate valuation ratios that would look uncomfortable in a mature software category. The market is trying to price the slope of adoption, the durability of enterprise demand, the cost of compute, and the speed at which reasoning becomes cheaper.
The capital requirement is equally important. Frontier capability now demands industrial quantities of chips, energy, networking, data centers and long-term capacity commitments. A model company can scale revenue quickly while carrying the appetite of an infrastructure builder. Public capital offers a balance sheet large enough for that contradiction.
OpenAI Builds Daily Habit
OpenAI is building a different asset: habit.
Hundreds of millions of people have learned to open a screen and begin by asking an intelligence layer to help them write code, study physics, examine a market, design a project or coordinate work. Once a behavior becomes instinctive across a generation, software starts reorganizing around it.
OpenAI also submitted a confidential S-1 in June. Public investors may soon compare two frontier laboratories with different customer mixes, distribution strengths and infrastructure strategies. One has become deeply embedded in enterprise work. The other has created a mass-market reflex.
The comparison will move beyond benchmark scores. Investors will ask how much revenue each dollar of compute produces, how quickly inference cost falls, how durable customer habit becomes, and whether capital intensity creates a moat or a permanent appetite for financing.
SpaceX Gives Science Fiction an Income Statement
SpaceX offers the reference point because its future has already crossed into the public market.
The company priced its IPO at $135 per share, producing an implied valuation of roughly $1.77 trillion. Nasdaq described the June listing as the largest IPO in Wall Street history. The operating story spans reusable launch, Starlink connectivity, AI infrastructure and the heavy construction ambitions of Starship.
Traditional valuation frameworks struggled with the gap between current revenue and the future embedded in the price. That struggle is productive. Public markets force a magnificent story to meet quarterly evidence. Launch cadence, subscribers, capital expenditure, margins and cash requirements become visible. Science fiction receives an income statement.
The same discipline will matter for Anthropic and OpenAI. Private funding can price a shared vision among a small group of sophisticated investors. A public listing exposes that vision to continuous judgment, liquidity and a much wider range of time horizons.
The Multiple Prices the Curve
At a $2 trillion valuation, Anthropic’s revenue multiple would depend heavily on which run-rate and year-end estimate an investor accepts. SpaceX entered the market near 95 times its 2025 revenue. These figures are better understood as claims about the future than descriptions of the present.
The investment questions become concrete:
- How fast can revenue compound?
- How durable is demand when model quality converges?
- How much capital is required for each new unit of revenue?
- How quickly does the cost of useful reasoning decline?
- Who captures the savings when intelligence gets cheaper?
Falling reasoning cost can expand the market. Cheap compute enabled software to digitize the world. Cheap bandwidth enabled the modern internet. Cheap storage created oceans of media and data. Cheaper intelligence may embed reasoning in factories, vehicles, laboratories, software and ordinary household objects.
The company that lowers unit cost while increasing valuable usage can turn price compression into demand expansion. The company that lowers price faster than it builds habit and operating leverage can create a spectacular product with fragile economics. The public market will eventually distinguish the two.
Three Visions Converge
Anthropic demonstrates how quickly enterprise intelligence can transform economic workflows.
OpenAI shows what happens when reasoning reaches mass distribution and becomes daily human habit.
SpaceX is building physical infrastructure across launch, satellites, connectivity and compute.
They approach the future from different directions and converge on the same idea: intelligence is becoming infrastructure.
A five-year-old company can plausibly discuss a $2 trillion debut. Nearly a billion people can lean on an AI partner each week. Reusable rockets can land while satellites turn orbit into a distribution layer. The cost of reasoning can fall as capacity and ambition rise.
The number on the headline deserves skepticism and curiosity in equal measure. The valuation is a claim. The infrastructure transition is already underway.
What a wonderful time to remain curious.
