# The robot sold. Who paid twice?

Observed 10 October 2026, Hong Kong time. Research question: when public disclosures show revenue, orders or operating hours for humanoid robots, which evidence connects those figures to repeatable customer economics?

## Why this note exists

China's State Council and National Development and Reform Commission are pushing embodied intelligence toward real industrial use, reliability testing and application at scale. That makes commercialization evidence more important, not less. A policy label, a production target, recognized revenue, an order book and hours worked each answer a different question.

This note stress-tests one five-part revenue-quality gate against three current disclosure windows:

1. UBTECH's interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2026;
2. Agility Robotics' SEC-filed commercial and operating disclosures; and
3. BMW's customer-side account of Figure 02 at Spartanburg.

It is a selected comparison, not a vendor ranking or an investment recommendation.

## The five receipts

| Receipt | What would make it useful |
| --- | --- |
| First customer payment | Recognized revenue tied to an external paying customer, with affiliate and government-linked demand separated |
| Second customer payment | A renewal, repeat order or expansion under comparable commercial terms |
| Productive operation | Customer-confirmed accepted output and operating hours, with the observation period and human assistance visible |
| Service-adjusted economics | Product or deployment margin after integration, field service, maintenance, warranty and support |
| Customer mix | Revenue concentration and the share attributable to private, government-linked or affiliated buyers |

No single reviewed disclosure closes all five receipts.

## Evidence window 1: UBTECH

UBTECH's 28 August 2026 interim announcement reports:

- RMB1,269.1 million of group revenue for the first half of 2026;
- RMB590.3 million from full-size embodied intelligent humanoid robot products and services, up from RMB38.2 million in the prior-year period;
- sales volume of 921 full-size humanoid units;
- 44.7% overall group gross margin; and
- a RMB338.8 million loss for the period.

The filing says the greater share of full-size humanoid products and services, which it describes as higher-margin, helped lift the overall gross margin. It does not publish a separate humanoid gross-margin percentage after installation and field service. In the reviewed announcement, customer-level repeat orders, customer-confirmed operating hours and a private-versus-government-linked revenue split are not published.

The announcement separately records RMB8.3 million of other income consisting primarily of government grants and tax refunds. That is not the same question as government-linked customer revenue and should not be used as its substitute.

## Evidence window 2: Agility Robotics

Agility's October 2026 SEC-filed investor material reports nine committed customer-facility deployments and 65,000 operating hours for Digit 4. It also reports more than $300 million of committed Digit 5 orders.

The footnote changes the meaning of the headline: the $300 million relates to 1,000 Digit 5 robots under a three-year Robotics-as-a-Service contract with one purchaser, is subject to contractual milestones, includes warrants that vest with deployment, and is not current-period revenue. The latest registration material says Digit 5 early access is expected in the first half of 2027 and general availability by the end of 2027.

The registration statement also describes a Customer Acceleration Program that charges roughly $500,000. Four customers had signed by May 2026, while more than 30 prospective customers were in the program or pipeline. This is evidence of paid evaluation, not yet evidence that those four customers converted to scaled repeat deployments.

Agility's 65,000-hour figure is useful field evidence, yet it remains company-reported in the reviewed material. The filing does not connect those hours to an observed service-adjusted margin. Its published lifetime revenue, payback and future product-margin figures are explicitly illustrative projections.

## Evidence window 3: BMW and Figure

BMW supplies the strongest customer-side operating receipt in this set. Its February 2026 production account says Figure 02 supported more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles, moved more than 90,000 components and logged around 1,250 operating hours over ten months at Spartanburg. BMW also describes a staged process from theoretical assessment to laboratory work, test deployment and pilot operation.

That record establishes a named customer, task, period and useful output. It does not publish the commercial price, Figure's margin after integration and support, or a repeat order. BMW says it and Figure were evaluating additional Figure 03 uses. Evaluation is progress; it is not the second payment.

## Comparison card

| Disclosure window | Strongest public receipt | Material limit in the reviewed sources |
| --- | --- | --- |
| UBTECH, first half 2026 | RMB590.3 million recognized full-size humanoid revenue and 921 units | No customer cohort, repeat-order series, customer-confirmed hours, government-linked customer share or separate service-adjusted humanoid margin |
| Agility, through October 2026 | 65,000 company-reported operating hours, nine facilities and paid evaluation commitments | The $300 million order is one-customer, milestone-dependent future value rather than current revenue; observed deployment margin is not published |
| BMW / Figure, February 2026 | Customer-side record of 1,250 hours and more than 90,000 components | Price, supplier margin and a completed repeat order are not published |

Absence from these reviewed sources is not evidence that a measure is zero or that a company lacks it. It means the disclosure cannot support that part of the comparison.

## What the gate changes

The gate prevents three common substitutions:

- order value for recognized revenue;
- units sold for accepted productive work; and
- gross margin for deployment economics after service.

A company can show real progress in one column while another remains unmeasured. UBTECH gives the clearest recognized-revenue and unit evidence in this set. Agility gives the clearest supplier-side duration and commercial-commitment evidence. BMW gives the clearest customer-side operating record. None of those observations, alone or together, establishes a like-for-like US-China productivity or profitability ranking.

## Method and limits

The six primary public sources below were reopened on 10 October 2026. Claims were retained only where the source supported the number and its qualifier. Company and issuer disclosures were treated as claims by their named authors; BMW's release was treated as a customer-side operating account. The selected policy story supplied a research lead, not authority.

No private customer contract, operator log, invoice, portfolio record or non-public diligence was used. No robot was tested. No procurement, investment, allocation, trade, application or external contact was performed. Completing this note does not complete any underlying business or investment decision.
